Grip and purchase are affected by multiple variables; shod or barefoot, gait, the substrate and that is before we look at trimming variations and traction devices. This subject is at the very heart of our purpose; we need to understand grip and purchase to perform our mission.

I have been interested in grip and purchase my whole life, as this topic affects almost every area of hoof care. If you shoe racehorses, you want to know if you can make them faster; if you shoe draft horses, how can you help them better pull a load; in sports and riding, where can you adapt hooves or shoeing so that a horse turns tighter, jumps higher.

Paul Horner has spent many years on this single subject, and his novel findings will be shared my next webinar. My observations are more anecdotal; I believe that the huge variety in types of horse, and purposes we have for them, means that we need to understand grip and purchase so we can adapt our work to suit.
